When we had to cancel our honeymoon to Crete earlier this year we waited until we had the all clear from my surgeon and switched it up with a baby-moon to Majorca instead.
Mainly because I'm still holding out for a Honeymoon where I can indulge in a few bottles of bubbly! and because who wants to pass up on a chance to go to our original destination: Domes Noruz, Chania.
The criteria for our babymoon was a little different. We wanted sunshine but I didn't fancy a long flight and I wanted the option to be pretty lazy if I needed to be. Not at all what we would usually look for in a holiday so some light activities near by was still essential.
We went with Majorca because it was somewhere new for both of us and had been recommended by friends. I was sold on the 2 hour flight time and the amazing looking beaches with snack stops on every corner (nothing at all with hoping to stumble across the love island villa at some point!).
There was also a choice of three towns we could potential go and visit for our more adventurous sightseeing days and our hotel had an amazing looking pool, plus an all you can eat breakfast, what more could you want?!
We ended up spending most of our week at the beach. Tom read two books and I got through my audio book ‘Everything I know About Love’ by Dolly Alderton (I'd definitely recommend it) quicker than I thought so I spent the remainder of our time listening to pregnancy related podcasts.
We ventured into Pollença old town on Sunday for their market, but quickly retreated to a cafe and soon after back to the bus as the temperatures that day soared to a massive 36 degrees and we were both struggling a bit to cope. We cooled down with an afternoon at our hotel pool.
On Tuesday we ventured out again and got the bus to Alcúdia old town for their market day. It was a much more manageable 30 degrees and we drifted in and out of shops (picking up some lovely new pottery) before heading for an extended lunch of tapas and an extra large ice cream.
Before we came away I was pretty nervous about travelling with a baby on board. I was really worried that if anything went wrong we would be so far from my doctors, midwife and the amazing NHS. I worried that the constant changes in my body would make it unpredictable and I didn’t know how I’d react to the extreme heat, dehydration etc. I packed my maternity notes, enough Gaviscon to sink a small ship and made sure we were insured up to the eyeballs before we went. It turns out I really didn’t need to worry as every time I felt like I was struggling we’d just stop for more Fanta Lemon or a lie on a sun lounger in the shade.
I also wasn’t sure how to make the most of a holiday with a much more restricted diet (no pâté, cold meats or shellfish) and no alcohol. As a big foodie who lives for meals out and plenty of red wine I couldn’t see how we could make the most of our holiday, but we did. It was just different, a lot more chilled out, I didn’t worry about how many calories I was eating...hello all the ice-cream I could manage, and we swapped our wine drinking for late night wandering along the sea front.
As I said in my previous post, I really didn’t realise just how much we both needed a break, some time away just the two of us to reconnect, forget about the cancer and look forward to our future. I always think the sign of a great holiday is looking forward to coming home. We’ve taken a step back from our life and taken time to realise just how lucky we are. We have so many exciting things to look forward to (and a couple of slightly scary things too) in the next few months and I feel refreshed and ready to take them on feeling much more like my old self again!
